IOSH

Established in 1945, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is a UK Royal Charter health and safety agency dedicated to the vision of creating a safer and healthier workplace. As an independent and non-profit agency, it provides a wide range of health and safety credentials for a wide variety of individuals, regardless of their field of employment, role or experience. The most common safety course for employees coping with responsibilities such as shielding workers from occupational hazards and health hazards are IOSH Safe Management. In addition to safety credentials, IOSH states that it is one and the only association in the world to give Health and Safety Practitioners Chartered Membership (Affiliate Member, Associate Member, Technical Member, Graduate Member) where the membership status helps practitioners meet the highest professional standards. A framework called Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for knowledge advancement and recognition of skill gaps was created by IOSH.

WHAT IS TRAINING FOR IOSH?

Training courses at IOSH help people remain healthy and safe at work in all industries. There are two IOSH Training Courses available: Safely Working and Safely Managing:

  • The Working Safely course is targeted at all workers and addresses the basics of occupational health and safety.
  • The Managing Safely course is directed at administrators, team leaders and supervisors and gives them the experience and knowledge inside their teams to handle health and safety.

IOSH training courses incorporate up-to – date theory and practice to enable certificates to be obtained by about 100,000 individuals a year. Earning an IOSH certification would allow the holder to make sure that their workplace’s health and safety policies are present, productive and well controlled.

WHAT DOES TRAINING FOR IOSH INCLUDE?

IDENTIFYING RISKS

A number of hazards that could potentially cause harm, including mechanical, physical, chemical, environmental, biological and organisational hazards, are considered in the Working Safely course. The Managing Safely course looks at risks, including location, operation, substance and equipment, from a particular industry perspective.

DEFINING AND EVALUATING HAZARDS

IOSH courses guide learners through the process of risk evaluation and use a straightforward rating system to be used during evaluations.
